Do you believe the Bible? As Christians, we often say that we do. The Bible is a large and complex book. We can study it for a lifetime and there will still be plenty to learn.
And Christians sometimes disagree about what the Bible teaches. Over the years, Christian leaders decided that some things in the Bible are absolutely important. Other things are not essential. Faithful Christians can disagree on some of the details.
But one area that we need to be especially careful about: we need to make sure that we actually read and understand what it says.
When I was about 20, I was having a conversation with a friend. He told me that he believed that the Bible teaches that races should stay separate. I asked him why. He told me because in the Genesis story of the Tower of Babel, God separated people into races.
This is bad biblical interpretation in a lot of ways, but I challenged him on the most basic point. Genesis does not say anything about race in the Tower of Babel story. Nothing! I pulled out my Bible and told him to show me where it says anything about race. He read it over and over. He had to acknowledge that it didn’t.
But he still didn’t change his mind.
Sometimes, the things you have been told are in the Bible are simply not there. Read it for yourself.
